MQuestion From Addison

Hi Saranghae,

I’ve been a Complete 5-Step customer for about 6 years and love it. I’ve always loved it and I get compliments on my skin all the time. I noticed that you’ve launched many new products recently and I’m curious and a little confused about how to use them with my 5-step. I admit I’m not great with change but I’m curious about tweaking my skincare routine a bit.

thanks Addison J.

Saranghae Recommendation

Hi Addison,

Wonderful question and we've been getting this question quite a bit lately.

You didn’t mention any specific products so I’m going to address your question a more holistic and philosophical manner.

Let’s start with how we like to approach skincare. You can think of any skincare routine as a combination of these 5 pillars:

1 - cleansing
2 - exfoliating (physical or chemical)
3 - concentrated correctives
4 - anti-inflammatory & skin healing
5 - moisturizing & protection

Each pillar can have multiple sub-sections, for example, cleansing can have 3 separate steps if you wish - makeup removal, oil cleansing, water cleansing, etc..

In general, each pillar represents a chronological step, so cleansing comes before exfoliating which comes before concentrated correctives.  Within those steps, we recommend you apply lighter texture to heavier texture.  So light and watery serums go before heavier serums or gels, which are applied before creams.

But even in this general rule of thumb, there are nuances. For example, if a concentrated corrective is too strong for you, you can add a heavier serum to help your skin absorb a corrective slower and thus less irritation.

Let me lay out an example that pertains to you. The Saranghae Complete 5-Step which is still one of our most popular and foundational anti-aging skincare routines looks like this

1 - double cleanser
2 - toner
3 - Deep Radiance Essence Serum
4 - Focus Renewal Eye Cream
5 - Firm & Lift cream

If we were to introduce the Advanced Brightening & Dark Spot Repair Serum (25% vitamin C concentrate with 1% tranexamic acid) we would make that our step 3So toner, brightening serum, then deep radiance and so on. This application plan allows you to absorb the Dark Spot Repair Serum quickly and fully before we introduce the anti-inflammatory (the deep radiance) to help calm everything down. As a side note, if you wanted to “stack” with another concentrated corrective, you would follow the same principle and apply it immediately after the dark spot repair serum.

However, if your eye area is sensitive to the concentrated acid (dark spot repair serum), you can apply the eye cream first around the eye followed by the dark spot repair serum and so on.

 Why would we do this?

For many of our customers, the eye area is highly sensitive so this methodology helps protect the eye from absorbing the corrective serum too quickly which may result in stinging and irritation.

Skincare is very personal and I think it’s important to acknowledge that there are no right or wrong answers. It’s simply what works for an individual and I would encourage you to experiment with different formulas and steps to better understand your skin and how to best take care of it.
I hope this helps and happy holidays!
